Let us rewind the time back to 2011, a guy who just graduated Master degree from Southwest Jiaotong University,has a great interest in drone models.
He published an article called “Stability of Multi-Axis UAVs”, which caught the attention of a famous university professor.The professor decided to fund his research on drone performance and applications,and he did not disappoint the professor.



At the time, the topic of “Smart City” was already very hot in China. People built 3D models of buildings mainly relying on large helicopters with high-resolution mapping cameras (such as phase one XT and XF).

This integration has two drawbacks:

1. The price is very expensive.

2. There are many flight restrictions.



With the rapid development of drone technology, industrial drones ushered in explosive growthin 2015, and people began to explore various applications of drones, including the “oblique photography” technology.

Oblique photography is a  type of aerial photography in which the camera axis is deliberately kept tilted from the vertical by a specified angle. The photographs, thus taken, reveal details masked in some ways in vertical photographs.



In 2015, this guy met another guy who has accumulated many years of experience in the field of surveying and mapping, so they decided to co-found a company specializing in oblique photography, named RAINPOO.

 



They decided to develop a five-lens camera that was light and small enough to be carried on the drone,first they simply pieced together the five SONY A6000,but it turns out that such integration cannot achieve good results, it is still very heavy, and it cannot be carried on the drone to carry out high-precision mapping tasks.

They decided to start their innovation path from the bottom. After reaching an agreement with SONY, they used Sony’s cmos to develop their own optical lens,and this lens must meet the standards of the surveying and mapping industry.



Products's History

Riy-D2:world‘s fist oblique camera that within 1000g(850g),optical lens specially developed for surveying and mapping.

This became a huge success. Just in 2015 , they sold more than 200 units of D2. Most of them were carried on multi-rotor drones for small area 3D modeling tasks. However, for large-scale with high-buildings 3D modeling tasks, D2 still cannot complete it.

In 2016, DG3 was born. Compared with D2, DG3 became lighter and smaller, with longer focal length, the minimum exposure time-interval is only 0.8s, with dust removal and heat dissipation functions … Various performance improvements make DG3 can be carried on the fixed-wing for large-area 3D modeling tasks.

Once again, Rainpoo has led the trend in the field of surveying and mapping.

 



Riy-DG3:weight 650g,focal length 28/40 mm,minimum exposure time-interval is only0.8s.

However, for high-rise urban areas, 3D modeling is still a very difficult task. Unlike the high accuracy requirements in the field of surveying and mapping, more application areas such as smart cities, GIS platforms, and BIM require higher quality 3D models.

In order to solve these problems, at least three points must be met:

1. Longer focal length.

2. More pixels.

3. Shorter exposure interval.

After several iterations of product updates, in 2019, DG4Pros was born.

It is a full-frame oblique camera specifically for 3D modeling of urban high-rise areas,with 210MP total pixels,and 40/60mm focal lengths,and 0.6s exposure time-interval.



Riy-DG4Pros:full-frame,focal length 40/60 mm,minimum exposure time-interval is only 0.6s.

After several iterations of product updates, in 2019, DG4Pros was born.

It is a full-frame oblique camera specifically for 3D modeling of urban high-rise areas,with 210MP total pixels,and 40/60mm focal lengths,and 0.6s exposure time-interval.

At this point, Rainpoo’s product-system has been very perfect, but the path of innovation of these guys has not stopped.

They always want to surpass themselves, and they did it.

In 2020,one type of oblique camera that subverts people’s perception is born — DG3mini.

From a team of only two guys, to an international company with 120+ employees and 50+ distributors and partners all over the world, it is precisely because of the obsession with “innovation” and the pursuit of product quality that makes Rainpoo has been continuouslygrowing.
